This meant that to align with what the company represents, the headquarters needed to be flexible, adaptable, forward-thinking, and future-focused. Designed by Gensler, the 52-story tower at 1600 South Figueroa would add to Central LA’s current development boom, contributing a mix of housing, retail, offices and a hotel to the area located near the Staples Center and LA Live Entertainment district. Above the hotel, the building splits into several masses containing over 300 condominium and rental units. Finally, the building would be capped off with several penthouse floors located within the sculptural appendage seen in the rendering. Twice a year, while we sleep, millions of birds all over the world are migrating through our cities on the way to and from their overwintering grounds and summer breeding spots. But, during their travels, millions of birds are killed in collisions with glass buildings that they can’t see. As this threat to global ecosystems becomes increasingly clear to people around the world, built environment designers can act to help solve the bird strike problem, rather than exacerbate it. Domestic buildings also kill many millions of birds, both native resident species and migrating ones, particularly songbirds. The issue is not just felt locally, but more expansively along migration corridors on every continent. Libraries and museums are adapting to new roles, partnering with like-minded organizations, and providing fundamental community functions rather than serving as ancillary spaces. Community asset mapping and strategic planning will help these institutions integrate within their communities to become more accessible, equitable community hubs.

In a similar way, the design industry has been ‘driving blind’ and operating without the information necessary to make informed decisions about the impact of building materials. He is actively engaged in the architecture community including AIA Los Angeles, The AIA Large Firm Roundtable, and code advocacy in partnership with the City of Los Angeles to decarbonize the city.
With this industry collaboration in place, standardized measurement tools and processes including EPDs and chain of custody certification systems like FSC and SFI can be leveraged to ensure that wood products in the built environment are being sourced sustainably. Historically, architectural design has been limited to what lies within the property line of a particular project. This narrow and disconnected view of design scope does not adequately address the wider, real-world impact of design decisions. For example, a wood floor finish was typically selected based on the cost, aesthetics, and product availability alone without full knowledge of impacts from sourcing, use, and disposal.
Once we become aware of nature around us, we begin to realise we are part of something bigger beyond the limits of our perception. There is so much of the world we can’t see, but there is an ultraviolet and electromagnetic world, imperceptible to our human senses, where birds and insects exist (as seen in this video). Some species can echolocate, navigate by the earth’s magnetic field, and have evolved receptors in their eyes that extend beyond the colour spectrum that our eyes can detect. They use these capacities to communicate, display their courtship finery, and find food.
At the end of the day, looking beyond the property line to the larger global context of material cycles will ultimately translate to better project outcomes. For example, the biophilic benefits of using wood as a structural system can translate to increased employee productivity and engagement in person at the office. As demonstrated in Gensler’s NEXT Labs project, buildings that use sustainable materials also perform better and can be aesthetic differentiators in a competitive market.
